Mike Welsh 9-16-91 11:00 a.m. Topic number four. Are you able to describe a coat tree when it is in the dark? Can you explain its form to anyone you meet? This may be a difficult task. In the dark you can't see all the details, in fact some of the details melt together. When the lights are turned off and the sun has gone down, the coat tree can appear as something other than itself. Perhaps it is a thief or an assassin lurking in the blackness. What of the disheveled closet? At night when the closet door is left open any number of creatures can seem to be peering out of it. My room, oddly enough, is the most unusual place that I can recall from my childhood, but only when the world lies in darkness. The red eyes would gleam from the unilluminated corners of my room, like a string of Christmas lights with only two bulbs lit. The shadows would take casual strolls through my room, through my mind and I knew every one of them. I would be sitting up in bed, frozen with fear and trembling with my sheets wrapped around me. The trembling was not unlike a day at the beach when you've just come up out of the water and a cold wind begins to blow, making you long for the warmth that the summer sun once brought. You wrap the towel around you, but it's never enough to protect you from the harsh wind. In the blackness of the night, deep in the second story dungeon of my room, I would make a dash for the light switch. My armour, the sheets from my bed, would protect me only momentarily. I would gallantly fight my way through the wasteland, a land laid waist only by my own mortal fear. The fear hindered my battle, but fed me as well. Triumph was mine. The glow of the ceiling lamp sent a warmth through my soul. I would then look at the clock, dawn was not far away and the coat tree was just that, a coat tree. I would quietly shut the closet, first affirming that nothing lurked within. I would then shut off the light, leap into bed with a sigh of relief and return to sleep. Thus, I left this unusual land from my childhood. |
